Reflecting on My First Year as a Celebrant
As I come to the end of my first twelve months as a registered celebrant, I find myself looking back with a full heart and a deep sense of gratitude. This first year has been more than just beginning a new role; it has been a year of learning, growing, listening, and being trusted to stand beside people during some of the most meaningful moments of their lives.
When I first stepped into celebrancy, I knew it would be special, but I do not think I fully understood just how much heart this work would hold. Every couple, every family, every ceremony has reminded me that no two stories are the same. Each one deserves time, care, and the right words to honour it properly.
Weddings have brought joy, laughter, nerves, excitement, and so many beautiful reminders of love. I have loved helping couples shape a ceremony that feels like them — not just formal words, but something personal, honest, and memorable. Being part of those first moments of married life is a privilege I never take lightly.
This year has also deepened my understanding of how important the right person is when families are saying goodbye. Funeral and celebration-of-life ceremonies call for compassion, calmness, and the ability to listen carefully to what matters most. I feel honoured by the possibility of doing more of this work and supporting families with warmth, dignity, and genuine care.
One of the biggest lessons from this first year is that being a celebrant is not only about standing at the front on the day. It is about preparation, communication, trust, and all the small details that help people feel safe and supported. It is about understanding that behind every ceremony is a story, and behind every story are people who deserve to feel seen and heard.
As I look ahead, I feel excited for what is still to come. I am grateful for every couple, every family, every conversation, and every ceremony that has helped shape me in this first year. I know I am still learning, and I hope I always keep learning, because this work deserves care, humility, and heart.
My first year as a celebrant has confirmed something very important for me: this is work I truly love. To be trusted with people’s stories, promises, memories, and goodbyes is something very special, and I am so thankful to be walking this path.
